How to meet your neighbors
We've all done it! We come home from work, pulled in the garage and walked inside, ready to veg. But we missed it. The chance to connect with our neighbors, those we live closest to. They feed the dog when you are on vacation, they make sure no one takes your Amazon delivery, they have a tool you can borrow or a cup of sugar. It can take time and energy but these are the people who have your back, so I've listed five easy ways you can get to know your neighbors.
- "Smile and wave, boys. Smile and wave."
We tend to underestimate the power of a smile. Nothing is being said, yet, so much is being communicated. A simple smile and wave, reduces stress, releases endorphins and connects us with another human being. Start with a smile.
- Details and common ground.
We all like to find something in common with one another. It helps us form friendships. A bumper sticker, animals, age, kids...look for the details as a way into conversation.
- Offer help.
Look for ways to offer help. It might be unpacking, mowing the lawn, babysitting or shoveling a driveway of snow. You never know what an act of kindness and service can do!
- Persistent not pushy.
Often times we can catch people while they are busy or preoccupied and maybe we don't get the response we were hoping for. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't try again. However, the key is to not be pushy. Give a few days time or a couple weeks between trys. Remember the smiles, details and acts of service.
Last but not least, bring over a plate of cookies or a baked bread or even order in a pizza on move-in day. No one can resist!
